Keeping your Formica LifeSeal Worktops in pristine condition consists of making sure the edges are properly sealed to keep any moisture at bay and prevent chipping, which can cause damage to the wood.

Have a look at the following 5 tips to ensure your Formica LifeSeal Worktop edges are sealed to perfection:

1.     Get rid of unwanted dust:

Before applying any sealant or varnish, ensure that the surface area and edges are clear of any unwanted dust or debris to ensure that the exposed receive the needed sealant without causing unwanted particles from getting stuck – ultimately creating bumps when applying an edging strip.

2.     Double coat the edges:

Use a good quality exterior grade varnish or sealant, ensuring you add two coats to the exposed wood, which will properly seal the edges before applying any type of edging. This will prevent moisture from entering the wood, causing swelling.

3.     Use a dabbing motion:

By using a dabbing motion on the exposed wood, this allows the varnish or sealant to penetrate the wood – as opposed to brushing over the surface which can prevent deeper areas in the wood from receiving the needed sealant.

4.     Implement an edging strip:

Use the free edging strip which comes with your worktop to cover the exterior edging creating extra protection from the elements. Apply contact adhesive to the wood as well as the edging strip and bond them together. File off any excess edging when the adhesive has dried.

5.     Apply aluminium tape:

Aluminium tape provides extra protection to interior edges where heat will be present, such as the cut-out edges made for a stove. Ensure that you seal the edging first, with varnish or sealant, before applying the aluminium tape.
